Research by Dr John T. Cacioppo, (former director of the Center for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience at the University of Chicago) has linked social isolation and loneliness of Seniors to higher risks for a variety of physical and mental conditions: high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, a weakened immune system, anxiety, depression, cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, and even death. There is great concern for the mental health of all adults, especially thinking of our Senior parents.
Studies show that Seniors who engage in meaningful, productive activities with others tend to live longer, boost their mood, and have a sense of purpose and may improve their cognitive function.
“I know Seniors who haven’t left their home property in over six months,” says Senior Inspirational Speaker, Naomi Carmona-Morshead.
Naomi became an Adventure Mountain Climber at age 61. On June 24, during COVID, she completed Hike #100. In five years, she hiked 36 mountains in North America, South America and Mt Kilimanjaro (19,341’) in Africa.
Naomi shares,
Since my Mom “flew” to heaven three years ago, climbing to the stars has been more meaningful. Now, more than ever, I inspire Seniors to remember the amazing life they have lived. Identify your forgotten dream, dust it off the shelf and come with me! I help you create legacy stories, imagine and re-invest ways to fly to the stars as the Superheroes You are!
Now 66, Naomi believes that social isolation is hurting the older population as much as COVID-19. She is determined to provide alternatives for everyday living. She offers these online activities for Seniors:
· “Uncover Your Parents’ SuperPowers” 4-Day Challenge
· Dream Sheets where Seniors identify new ideas
· “This is My Life” segments sharing Senior stories
· Focus Fridays Interactive Classes on Health, Outdoors, Telemedicine, Meditation
